Reckless
2018
christmas lights, computer control, soundtrack, FM broadcaster, Polygon building

For Reckless, I draped the newly built Polygon gallery in North Vancouver with LED light strings, covering the minimalist architecture with a layer of kitsch. I made cover versions of singles from Bryan Adam’s 1984 album ‘Reckless’ (which he wrote and recorded while living in North Vancouver), and made animations for these to play across the LED lights. My cover versions transform Adams arena rock, adding melancholy to the bombast. The work is an experiment in the power and emotionally transformative quality of surface - here both the lights and the sounds I use act as skins that the building and the songs wear, to create vastly different effects at odds to original intentions.
