A Sign in the Northwest Passage (Museum Photograph)
2010
C-print, cedar frame
5 1⁄4 × 4 ft

This is a large digital print from a 4 × 5 transparency of the sign taken on a cloudy day. I intend this photograph to be shown in a gallery context. The near white-out conditions of the snow and sky reminded me of the notionally ‘objective’ viewing conditions of a white cube gallery. Because the print is so large, the frame is necessarily heavy to protect it, and is created from the same black-stained cedar used for the original sign. As this is soft wood, I imagine that this frame will become marked over time as the work is installed and returned to storage, echoing how the sculpture it depicts will likewise be marked by its own voyage of dissemination.
