The camera electronics contained a GPS tracker that broadcast its location over a radio signal. The amateur radio operators that I worked with could track this so we could find the balloon payload box when it fell to earth. This broadcaster failed one time, and we only recovered the payload box and camera because someone called the phone number on the side of the box.

I took a photo of the crashed payload box and camera each time we tried for the image.
